Water glass xylophones are an easy, inexpensive way to play songs with common household items.
Adding colors to each glass can help kids distinguish the notes more easily.
You may need to spend a little time "tuning" the glasses by adjusting the water levels. "A" as a note has more water in the glass as "G". Less water is the glass creates a higher pitch than more.
We used jars which we had readily available. Water glasses with thinner rims will resonate more sound but are less sturdy than jars. Use a spoon or other metal object to strike the jars gently. Probably stating the obvious.....monitor this activity carefully since you have liquid with food dye in the containers.
The following are the notes to "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star":
C C G G A A G
F F E E D D C
G G F F E E D
G G F F E E D
C C G G A A G
F F E E D D C
To simplifiy the process assign a color to each note which matches the color of water in the glass.
We colored A red, C orange, D yellow, E green, F blue and G purple.
