Color Mixing Bags

sensory bags for toddlers, sensory bags for babies, coloring mixing activities

We used this activity at a play group our agency helps host in our community.
This is a simple sensory activity for babies and toddlers with inexpensive items most people have on hand.

We purchased a 16 ounce bottle of styling gel at our local Dollar Store and used half of the bottle for this activity.
Freezer resealable bags are best because they are thicker than standard resealable bags decreasing chances of the bag breaking and a huge mess ensuing :(

Add 4-8 ounces of gel to a lower corner of the bag with 6 drops of one color. We used yellow.

Add an equal amount of gel to the opposite upper corner and 6 drops of the other color. We used red.
It's nearing Halloween so we were envisioning orange.
Gently press any air out of the bag while slowly sealing the bag.
Too much air will decrease contact on the top of the bag with the contents.

Tape the bag on all four sides to the table or a baking sheet. The idea is to allow the child to explore and move the contents around with fingers (fine motor activity) while keeping the surface rigid for easier manipulation and...keeping the bag from bursting.

Let the exploration begin!

Aaaah Orange!

  1. You can use nail polish remover to erase the brand label (before adding contents) to view/enjoy the process a bit easier.
