Blueberry Cheerio Birdfeeders

We thank Happy Hooligans for this easy idea!

nature crafts for kids, blueberry crafts for kids, blueberry crafts for preschoolers

Since our last post Blueberries: Fruit / Vegetable of the month, we decided to incorporate blueberries into this week's play group activity.....and after attempting to complete with toddlers (18 month - 2 years) we think this would work best with preschoolers and younger school-age children. That isn't to say the toddlers didn't get anything out of the activity. They enjoyed eating the blueberries and cheerios, rolling the blueberries and very carefully inspecting the texture of the pipe cleaners. If we held the pipe cleaner, the older toddler successfully placed the cereal on the pipe cleaner- although our goals about what to do with the "snack" were at odds. All that said, we think older children will enjoy this easy activity, especially if they have a view of the feeder from a window.

You will need:
fresh blueberries (they can be over ripe- we mean to say "not frozen")
pipe cleaner
cheerios or other ringed cereal
twine or ribbon

Provide children each one pipe cleaner, a bowl of blueberries and one bowl of cereal.
Have children spike through the blueberries and thread through the cereal.
If children are learning patterns this would be a great opportunity to create a pattern of blueberries to cereal.

We were working with toddlers so our blueberries and cereal are fairly random.
The toddlers enjoyed eating the project supplies and even eating the cereal and berries off of the pipe cleaner like birds themselves ;)

Hang in a tree for the birds
Or.....the squirrels!
