This year, the local apple trees are laden with apples! We decided to pick some before the bears and the birds got to most of them and brought them in for play group.
We began with a paint activity, using the standard apple cut in half vertically for a printing item. We offered red, yellow and green paint.
The younger children (two's) also enjoyed using their fingers.
Cutting the apple half into a T-shape really enabled the younger children to get a better grasp on the apple half and we recommend spending the small bit of time to make this adaptation.
After painting we read "Ten Apples Up on Top" by Dr. Seuss
While listening to the story the children enjoyed balancing red and green bean bags on their heads. We have a large number of bean bags so we were able to pull out sufficient red and green but the colors really didn't matter to the children. Use what you have and it will be the same amount of fun.
We also adapted an old container into a 10 counter with red and green beads. First we cut a small hole in the top. Then we photo copied a picture in the book and taped onto our container. To stabilize the dowel, we hot glued the inside end to the bottom of the container. We should note, our dowel had a wooden cap-bead glued on the end to start.
The children had plenty of time for free play, getting to know one another and even ate a few bites of lunch :)
