Move Like an Animal Cube

We made this activity cube to use at our local health fair. With colder weather approaching, this is an easy activity to have around when the kids need to burn off some energy and strengthen their gross motor strength and coordination.

You will need:
a color printer
stock card paper (regular paper will work too)
packing tape
scissors
an empty square-ish tissue box

  • We chose 6 animals which use different types of movements.
  • Size your animal photos about 4 inches wide and print onto paper.
  • You can either type the movement word or write neatly.
  • Lay the tissue box over the animal, trace and cut.
  • Two sides (top and bottom) will vary slightly in size from the sides so be sure to trace 4 animal squares using a side and 2 using the top or bottom.
  • Tape each animal to a side with a piece of looped tape and begin covering the entire box with packing tape.
  • Roll the cube to see which animal movement to make.

Putting one foot forward while sliding the other foot just behind the other foot- in a continuous motion.
One foot is always the lead.
Galloping, develops around 3 1/2 to 5 years of age.

Trying to walk with a rolled up pair of socks between the knees can help simulate a waddle
while arms are straight and mostly to the the sides.

Big, powerful jumps!

Jump from a squatting position.

Run while holding arms horizontally.
Birds of prey use their wings as sails and don't often flap their wings while soaring.

Walk on hands and feet with torso facing up.
A great bilateral activity.

If your children enjoy this activity, you may want to make a few with different animals to keep them interested in participating. Better yet....have them draw the animals!
