Learning to Sew

At our last Play Group for the season we set up a group sewing activity in which the children took turns. Sewing can be a bit of a lost skill among so many other opportunities for high-tech activities. However, you can't beat sewing for strengthening fine motor skills, improving hand-eye coordination, and a more tactile, open-ended experience. The preschoolers were really excited to take their turn at sewing. It is, after all, considered "real work". We sent each of them home with their own plastic needle with parents planning on providing this opportunity at home as an open activity.

You will need:
An embroidery or quilting hoop (about 1 foot in diameter)
Burlap
Large, thick needle- plastic preferable (we purchased our at Discount School Supply)
Embroidery or craft yarn

Makes a nice table runner or hang on a dowel for a vertical view!
