We began by searching our yarn stash for red and green yarn. Then we found an apple template from the web and sized it so the apple portion was about 4" high. We then traced the apple shape and cut them from the cardboard.
Cutting notches around the edges is optional and can help the yarn stay in place on the rounded edges. One child was more interested at the time in cutting snips on the edges than wrapping the yarn.
This activity also gives a natural setting to use the words "under" and "over" as the children wrap the yarn around the shape.
While searching for the yarn, we found some peach in color. So we altered the shape of some of the apples before cutting, rounding out the top and adding a point to the bottom.
For a treat, we enjoyed fresh off the tree apples, sliced with Nutella and a fruit & nut mix. Yum!
