Signing with Young Children

why sign with babies?, signing with kids

Why sign?

In babies:
Builds a deeper bond, as you are better able to meet your baby’s needs and reduce her frustration (less tantrums) and have better insight into her mind.

Increases both receptive and expressive language skills. Good language skills will make learning to read easier.

Your baby can begin two-way conversations sooner.

You baby will likely speak earlier than had you not used signs.

Increases spatial relationships and reasoning skills.

Increased emotional intelligence and pragmatic skills.

In verbal children:
Signing is considered a second language and learning a second language raises IQ.

With signing, you have BOTH auditory and visual input- this type of communications uses more areas of the brain and is a blessing for children who are visual or “hands-on” learners.

Signing requires both communicating parties are looking at each other while they are communicating- improving communication habits.

Signing is a great for improving fine motor skills needed for writing.

One in 10 American’s has some form of hearing loss. This allows your child to communicate with this population.

Signing is a great way to communicate with your child across a large room.

Signing will help with later word retrieval

We have books on signing available in our Resource Libraries:
"The Baby Signing Book" by Sara Bingham
"Signing Smart with Babies and Toddlers" by Michelle Anthony and Reyna Lindert
