Basil Play Dough

This activity was inspired by Anna at The Imagination Tree and the fact that we had a bunch of basil leftover from our Chicken Artichoke Stew from Lattes and Leggings we served after our Active Parenting workshop this week.

herb playdough, natural playdough, uncooked playdough, what to make with extra basil

We made uncooked play dough.

You will need:
fresh basil
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
2 Tablespoons oil
12 ounces water
A microwave or stovetop
bowl
mixing spoon
resealable plastic bag
rolling pin & wooden mallet or a mortar & pestle

First we chopped our basil roughly with a knife.

We had over a cup of chopped basil but even 1/2 cup would work. Use what you have.

We placed our basil in a resealable plastic bag and rolled with a rolling pin and smashed with a play dough hammer. Kids will love helping with this part! The juices look a little brown.

Mix the dry ingredients (2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, and 2 Tablespoons cream of tartar in a large bowl. Toss in crushed basil.

Heat 1 1/2 cups of water in a microwave for 3 minutes or until boiling. We added the 2 Tablespoons of oil in the water and then poured the liquids over the flour basil mixture.

Mix dry and wet ingredients together until you have a fragrant play dough. Honestly you'll wish you had added some yeast and had some sauce and cheese handy. It smells fantastic!
