Silly putty is made by using 2 parts glue to one part liquid starch. Add some food coloring if you like. We used neon blue. We worked on a small scale, using 2 Tablespoons glue and 1 Tablespoon liquid starch.

If the putty sticks to your fingers add a few drops of liquid starch.
If it doesn't stick together, add more glue.
Silly putty mixed to the right ratio should "bounce".

Have children play with silly putty on a washable surface, with a smock or play clothes.

To extend this activity, offer small objects that can be hidden in the putty and "found".
Press cookie cutters or stamps into the putty to make impressions.
Use a straw to blow bubbles of silly putty.
