Easy Salt Dough Ornaments

This is a timeless activity for a reason. The cost of supplies are minimal, ingredients are usually on hand and the activity adapts to the abilities of the artist.

You will need:
1 cup of flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup water
cookie cutters
a straw
an oven

Optional items: food dye, paint, paint brushes, glitter glue or paint, sequins, jewels, buttons, yarn, etc.

Instructions:
  • If you want to color the dough- add some food coloring to the water before mixing with the flour and salt
  • Mix the items together in a bowl. Kids will have fun measuring and mixing. If the dough seems sticky, add a bit more flour.
  • Roll out on a floured surface and cut into shapes with your cookie cutters. If you don't have cookie cutter you can also just cut shapes with a butter knife. Cookie cutters are easier and allow small children to cut shapes from the dough.
  • Bake in the oven for 1 1/2 hours at 250 degrees F. Check every 30 minutes to ensure the are cooking evenly.
  • Allow to cool completely and have fun decorating. If painting, allow paint to dry before gluing embellishments.
