This time of year, whole nuts are widely available.
Purchase some whole walnuts, along with pecans, almonds, and hazelnuts from your produce department. Shelling nuts is a great science activity because it's not often children see the nuts prior to being shelled.
You will need:
whole walnuts
pool noodle or other type of floating, waterproof foam
toothpicks
plastic lids
scissors
- Keep the walnut shells you are able to keep together as a half.
- Cut small pieces of pool noodle foam to fit into the walnut shells.
- Cut narrow (isosceles) triangles out of your plastic lids.
- We used an awl from a leatherman tool to create two holes in our triangle on the long vertical side. Insert toothpick as shown.
- Post your toothpick sail in the foam and set sail!
